The late 20th century has brought with itself an age of automation and globalization that created a huge challenge for the blue-collar working class. Americans who wanted a decent job would now have to possess a good degree and creativity and flexibility. Even after having all the right skills, they face huge challenges to find a place in the workforce.
Martin Ford has mentioned how technology is threatening even the expensively educated. The book humbles every person and makes us understand the economic consequences of technology. The author does not venture into the possibility of being opened by wearable medical devices and military technology. The book highlights the consequence of robotization and this is the part that is mentioned very skillfully.
As adults drift out of the workforce and the recession creates havoc, companies are now deciding to operate successfully with artificial technology. Technology now advances in direction of full unemployment.
But the author provides little hope that these technologies will generate other sources of employment. He also asks how the mass will utilize their freedom from labor in other productive areas like civic participation and arts.
